National Beer Day is not a national holiday, but when it hits this Sunday, it will likely be a cause to celebrate for bars owners and revelers alike.
Why April 7? Eighty-six years ago, a new federal law went into effect allowing the sale of beer containing less than 3.2% alcohol, the first legal alcohol allowed since Prohibition began in 1919.
Thank President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who signed the legislation, The Cullen-Harrison Act, in March 1933, which went into effect a month later. Enough states approved the 21st Amendment later that year to bring an end to Prohibition.
Some beer lovers a decade ago decided the day deserved celebration for its historic nature – they have a National Beer Day Facebook page – and social media has helped the holiday grow.
Enough people joined in last year to make National Beer Day the fifth-largest sales day of the year for local bars – bigger than New Year’s Eve, Mardi Gras, Super Bowl Sunday, or any day during Oktoberfest – according to small business data provider Womply, which analyzed transactions at 3,500 local bars and lounges nationwide.

Quaker Steak & Lube: Domestic pints are $2 Sunday at participating locations.
Yard House: Select locations will be offering $3 pints Sunday. Times may vary by location and not valid in Illinois, Massachusetts, New York and Pennsylvania.
Hurricane Grill & Wings: Get a domestic draft for $3 on National Beer Day Sunday.
Luna Grill: All beers are $3 on Sunday.
Lyft and Florida Brewers Guild: In a blog post, Lyft said it is “encouraging all craft beer fans to Ride Smart” on April 7 and use code BEERDAY19 to get 50% off two rides, up to $5 each, to and from the breweries listed on the blog. Then April 8 through July 6, use code FLGUILD19 to get 25% off two rides to and from the same batch of breweries.
Drizly: Don’t want to go out? The beer delivery service is offering a special through April 7 for new customers, either $5 off or free delivery with promo code nationalbeerday.
PicoBrew: Been thinking about making your own beer? Home brewing machine maker PicoBrew is bundling a free six-pack of PicoPaks (each is used to make a batch of beer) when you order a Z Series or Pico C machine.
Applebee’s: Not a beer deal, but the chain’s April drink of the month is the Strawberry Dollarita, which costs $1 at participating locations. The drink is made with tequila, strawberry and margarita mix, served on the rocks and with a Twizzlers candy garnish.
Chili’s: The $5 Margarita for April is the “Straw-Eddy ‘Rita,” which is made with Lunazul Blanco Tequila, Deep Eddy Lemon Vodka, fresh sour and strawberry purée.
More deals: Some local bars and breweries also will celebrate National Beer Day with specials. Check social media accounts to find additional offers.
Here are cash-back apps and loyalty programs to save year-round:
Ibotta: The cash-back app offers savings on alcohol, including beer at grocery and liquor stores and at restaurants and bars in most states. Ibotta’s help page notes 10 states are excluded from beer rebates including Hawaii, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia. Ibotta also has cashback offers on groceries, household items, online shopping and more. Once you earn $20 in cash back through the app, you can transfer money to a PayPal or Venmo account or choose a gift card.
Checkout 51: New weekly deals begin every Thursday. Star items you may buy; snap a photo of your receipt showing you bought the item, then select items on your receipt and click “claim it” to receive credit for offers. Once your account balance reaches $20, you can request the company mail you a check.
Fetch Rewards: Buy certain brands and specific products and take photos of your receipts to earn points that can be cashed in for select gift cards.
Budweiser Rewards: There are three ways to earn points that can be redeemed for prizes: Buy select Budweiser beer, buy TicketMaster tickets using a link from Budweiser or engage with the brand on social media or its website. Secret Hopper: Not a cash-back app, but mystery shopping meets craft breweries with Secret Hopper, which describes itself on its website as a “mystery shopping service for craft breweries.” Hoppers need to apply to be independent contractors and will be contacted when positions open. The website also notes “Secret Hopper is not a way to make money, but a fun way to fund your craft beer hobby and help the industry we all love.” Learn more at www.secrethopper.com.
Untappd: The popular beer check-in app has a special badge you can earn if you tap in on Saturday or Sunday. Your activity can get you special discounts at your local restaurant and bar.
Untappd creating a badge has helped drive the “meteoric growth in popularity of the holiday,” said Justin Smith, who is known as the “godfather of National Beer Day” for championing the celebration.
This year, he said, “a self-proclaimed ‘beer drinking expert’ named Phil from Beer Goals is planning to hold the ‘world’s largest virtual beer toast’ on (Sunday), hoping to draw over a million participants nationwide.”
Celebrating the beginning Prohibition’s end
Back to the history behind National Beer Day, when the beer ban was lifted in 1933, “historians have shared that more than 1.5 million gallons of beer flowed as Americans celebrated U.S. breweries,” said Julia Herz, craft beer program director for the Brewers Association and publisher of CraftBeer.com.
“April 7th is a day to recognize beer and the U.S. craft brewing community’s contributions to our country and our culture,” she said.
Last year, National Beer Day fell on a Saturday, which is already the biggest sales day of the week for bars. With the holiday on Sunday this year, “we expect it to be a big day but not quite as big as last year,” said Brad Plothow, vice president of brand and communications at Womply.
However, the holiday’s growth on social media – expect #NationalBeerDay to trend on Twitter, it did last year – could give it “a little more of a consumer lift as people get more familiarity with it,” he said.
Also, the day before National Beer Day is known as New Beer’s Eve, which is on a Saturday, could make for “a really impactful weekend,” Plothow said.
Local establishments can still cash in, he says. “A very simple social media campaign or email campaign to your customers letting them know you are going to be open, maybe you are running some kind of a deal, could go a really long way to bars who want to see a big surge in traffic,” Plothow said. “When you give consumers some incentive, people do respond……Read more>>
